Coimbatore, Nov. 13
The drivers of 'free mortuary van service'demonstrated in front of the South Taluk Office today alleging that they are being forced to carry more than three dead bodies per trip.

The free mortuary van service is jointly under the control of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) and the district administration.
Speaking on this, Suresh Kumar, a driver of free mortuary van service , stated "There are 10 free mortuary vans in Coimbatore, out of which only two are in working condition. Hence, during days when there are more number of deaths, we are forced to carry more than three dead bodies in one van, which is not proper. Often, it leads to scuffle between the relatives of the deceased with the drivers with regard to delivery time".

Mr. Suresh further alleged "Earlier we were promised a remuneration of Rs. 525 per day but whereas we were never paid anything more than Rs. 215. Not just this incident; there is no transparency in the functioning of Red Cross Society. Hence, understanding the nature of our job and our just representation , we expect the district administration to intervene in the issue and convene a meeting at the earliest".
